Week-long celebrations were held in July in Chennai to mark the 300th anniversary of the arrival of the first Protestant missionary to India. “The arrival of Bartholomaeus Ziegenbalg in Tranquebar in 1706 no doubt marked a remarkable change in the lives of the Tamils in that area,” declared Surjit Singh Barnala, governor of India’s Tamil Nadu state inaugurating the celebrations.
